That
Malta has a maritime tradition is self evident surrounded, as it is, by
the sea. Besides, Malta's historical connection with the knights
of Malta and later the British, has led to a highly sophisticated service
industry in the maritime field.
Whilst
Malta's strong maritime tradition has meant that foreign vessels have long
been registered in Malta, the last few years have seen the island's open
ship register develop swiftly. Gross Tonnage of Maltese registered
vessels has increased significantly and Malta now ranks high amongst maritime
nations in terms of ships registered.
Registration
of vessels under the Malta flag and operation of Maltese ships is regulated
by the Merchant Shipping Act, which has been heavily amended in the last
few years in order to make the Maltese Registry more attractive. |
