About Malta and CTN
  • Why Malta?
Malta (population: 370,000; size 316 sq. km) is an ideal platform from which international business activities may be conducted. Situated in the very centre of the Mediterranean Sea at the crossroads of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, the island state boasts a stable economy, political stability as well as a skilled and versatile workforce. English and, to a lesser extent, Italian, are spoken by almost all, while Maltese being Semitic in origin, gives many Maltese a natural basic understanding of Arabic.

Although competition among offshore centres throughout the world is intense, Malta’s system has evolved over the years from a rather typically basic "offshore centre" in the late 1980’s to a unique highly sophisticated system nowadays which, whilst doing away with the term "offshore" in the classic sense, has combined an interesting blend of realistic corporate taxation (35% flat rate on income) together with a series of favourable tax credit incentives (4.17% net tax cost of non-resident shareholder), thus effectively enhancing the possibility of double tax relief granted either by the local law itself or alternatively by means of the relevant tax treaty concluded between Malta and thirty or so countries.

Malta has a Civil Code which is based on the Napoleonic model, while most of Malta’s commercial legislation has been traditionally derived from English law (the island was a British Dependency until 1964) as well as (more recently) the relevant European Union models (although not being an EU member, Malta has very close social, economic and political relations with the Union).

Although tourism forms the natural backbone of Malta’s industry, the financial service industry has been experiencing constant growth, drawing primarily from the island’s political and economic stability. This, combined with modern, functional financial service laws (the Malta Financial Services Centre - MFSC - is the sole official regulatory body) as well as “state of the art” telecommunication systems, has contributed towards making Malta an international business centre of repute.

Maltese banking laws and practice are modelled upon the English system, and Malta’s interesting range of four local as well as fifteen or so international banking institutions has contributed towards creating a healthy competitive environment in the sector.
